Federal: New Travel Ban Targets 19 Countries

What happened?

On June 5, 2025, President Trump announced a new travel ban affecting 19 countries, effective June 9, 2025. The policy blocks or limits visa access based on national security concerns, visa overstay rates, and lack of cooperation from foreign governments.


Overview:

This is one of the broadest travel bans in U.S. history, with wide-reaching effects on immigration, business, education, and diplomacy. More countries may be added in the future.

  • Full Ban – 12 Countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen.
  • Citizens from these countries are barred from entering the U.S. on any visa type.
  • Partial Restrictions – 7 Countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistán, Venezuela.
  • Citizens from these countries cannot receive:
    • Immigrant visasTourist/business (B-1/B-2) and student/exchange (F, M, J) visas
    • Work visas may be granted only by waiver and often with shorter validity.


Additional Details:

  • Applies to individuals outside the U.S. on June 9 without a valid visa.
  • Existing visas issued before June 9 remain valid.
  • Visa renewals and extensions may be denied.
  • Consular officers are instructed to limit visa durations.

Exemptions:

  • U.S. green card holders and dual nationals.
  • Diplomats and international organization staff.
  • Special Immigrant Visa holders (e.g., Afghans who aided U.S. forces).
  • Adoptees and immediate family reunification cases.
  • Athletes attending major global events.
  • Religious or ethnic minorities facing persecution.

  • Healthcare: Shortages may worsen due to the blocked entry of doctors and caregivers from affected countries.
  • Technology & STEM: Disruptions in hiring and research due to visa limits on skilled workers.
