Reminder: Minimum Wage Exemption Threshold Increase

Governor Josh Green signed HB 2463, which raises the minimum wage exemption threshold and overtime requirements. The measure became effective on June 21, 2024.

The law increases the minimum salary threshold for exemption from $2,000 to $4,000 per month, which aims to ensure fair compensation for employees and to account for the rising cost of living in Hawaii.

  • Employees earning $4,000 or more per month (previously $2,000) are now exempt from several state labor laws, including minimum wage requirements. These employees can receive their salary on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis.

Employers must review their employees’ salaries to ensure compliance. Employees who do not meet the new threshold must be reclassified as non-exempt and will be eligible for overtime payments.
