As a reminder for all New York employers, New Yorkers must register to vote by specific deadlines to participate in Primary and General Elections. Deadlines also apply for updating registration details such as address or party enrollment.
General Election: November 4, 2025.
- Voter Registration Deadline: October 25, 2025
- By Mail: Applications must be received by your local board of elections by this date.
- In Person: Submit your application at a local board of elections or participating state agency by October 25.
- Early Mail/Absentee Ballot Request: October 25, 2025, is also the deadline to request a ballot by mail.
The registration status is available at the New York State Board of Elections website.
Time Off to Vote Notice – Under NY Election Law §3-110
- Employers must post a notice of voting leave rights at least 10 working days before each election and keep it posted until polls close.
- For the November 4, 2025, General Election, the notice should be posted no later than October 21, 2025.
- Employees who lack 4 consecutive hours outside work when polls are open may take up to 2 hours of paid time off to vote.
- Employees must notify employers 2–10 working days before the election if time off is needed.
- Time off should be at the start or end of the shift, unless otherwise agreed.
- Polls are generally open 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Failure to comply may result in penalties under state law.
