What happened?
On June 12, 2025, Governor Jenniffer González signed Puerto Rico Act No. 26-2025 into law, expanding employment protections for veterans.
Overview:
The law updates the 21st Century Veterans’ Bill of Rights (Act No. 203-2007) to ensure that veterans receive hiring and promotion preference for all types of job opportunities, including regular, temporary, permanent, full-time, part-time, and fixed-term positions.
Employers, both public and private, must now:
- Give preference to veterans when they are equally or more qualified than other candidates.
- Notify the Office of the Veterans’ Advocate about every competitive job opening, regardless of job type or duration.
- The Office will then share these opportunities with veteran organizations through its website or other official channels.
The law took effect immediately upon approval.
