Rhode Island Production Tax Incentives

Overview

  • Rhode Island offers a 30% transferable tax credit for projects that spend at least $100K and 51% of principal photography days occur in state (if a project spends at least $10M in state, the 51% requirement may be waived). The production company must be registered with the state prior to commencing activities in the state.
  • Rhode Island is committed to a work force including women, minority workers and vendors who represent the diversity of the state, the goal is to have a 15-20% racial diversity number per production. Transferors and sellers shall submit to the Rhode Island film office, and to the tax administrator in writing, a notification of any transfer/sale of tax credits within 30 days; the transfer notification shall include a processing fee of up to $200/transferee.

Eligible project types: Animation, Broadway, commercials, documentaries, feature films, music videos, pilots, reality TV, scripted TV.

Application Timing
The initial application shall be filed with the film office before the commencement of Rhode Island production activities. Production must begin within 60 days of initial certification.
